What Chester Elementary Students Want You to Know About Their School

  • We are a public school that was built as an "open-concept" school. That means that there are very few walls and doors in our school. Classes are divided by bookshelves and tri-fold dividers. Here are some pictures of some of the classrooms in our school.

  • Our school sits in between a high school on our left and a middle school on our right. We have three separate play areas for the different ages of students, which include basketball hoops. We have a garden that we planted last spring, and we are beginning to enjoy the produce from it. We are not allowed to have classroom pets at our school. Chester was a one-room school house at one point in time.
  • We are not required to wear uniforms. We have a special choir group for the fourth and fifth grade students who wish to participate called Tempos. Our fifth grade students get to be on Patrol. That means that the fifth grade students get to help cross students across the streets. We also have Math is Cool, which is an opportunity for the fourth and fifth grade students to attend different math competitions.

  • We have a computer lab with 30 computers. We have two book fairs each year--once in the fall and once in the spring.
  • We enjoy a variety of spirit days at our school, including Crazy Hair Day, Weird Hat Day, Backwards Day, Twin Day, and Class Color Day. We celebrate the first week of March--Read Across America Week-for Dr. Seuss birthday. During this week, we have something fun going on every day. Last year we had some of the high school drama team come to the school and do a skit of Cat in the Hat. One day we had several students from the middle school come and act out different children's picture books for our students. We have different community members come to the school to read to us, including firefighters and local sports teams. We have one day where we wear our pajamas, bring our blankets/sleeping bags, and flashlights, and we have flashlight reading in the gym. We end our week with a Bake-A-Cake-For-Dr. Seuss contest. After the cakes are judged, everyone in the school gets a piece of birthday cake. Here are a few pictures of some of the cakes that our students have made.
  • We have a great teaching staff. We have about 30 teachers. Our library has a cool mural and lots of stuffed animals around. There are about 10,000 books in our library

  • We usually get snow in our area, but the last two years, we have had a lot of snow for us. Two years ago, we still had snow the week before school was out. Last year we had three feet of snow that fell in 24 hours. We had five snow days where we didn't go to school because of the snow.
